Do you want your products to be broken due to the damage during shipment?
Imagine you are ordering high-quality and flawless products with your supplier in Indonesia which meets all of your expectations and specifications. However, when you receive them in your warehouse, you discover that the shipping cartons have disintegrated and the goods inside are irreparably damaged. The products you expected to be profitable are no longer sellable.
As an importer, you should never rely on your supplier to take the extra step to protect your products with appropriate packaging unless you have clearly asked about it at first. Many suppliers believe that once a shipment leaves their factory, they are no longer responsible for any issues that arise during shipping and handling.
So how can you ensure the packaging of your products is good enough to secure the product inside? The answer may be simpler than you think. Conducting a carton drop test is one of the best and effective ways to ensure your packaging meets your quality standards and protects your product inside.
WHO NEEDS TO CONDUCT A CARTON DROP TEST?
Importers who are concerned about the quality of their product or packaging should include a carton drop test, or package drop test, in their pre-shipment inspection plan. The test is usually done for products packed in a standard-sized carton box. Meanwhile, the goods packed in the other packaging standards, such as goods wrapped in plastic or other packaging materials should be tested in other standards.
A carton drop test simulates the shipping condition in which the goods may be damaged through a series of drops. The testing results will give both importer and manufacturer information on how the drop during shipment can damage the packaging materials and predict any potential damage to the product.
This test is a standard step of packaging inspection that the quality control inspectors use to assess the packaging quality. It is one of the simplest and effective packaging tests to perform. Usually, an inspector will perform this test by dropping the carton ten times from a certain height.
PACKAGING DROP TEST STANDARDS
Excellencial follows an international standard for package testing to ensure that our inspectors conduct the tests consistently from one inspection to another inspection services. This is especially important if you’re hiring a third-party inspection company because you can’t test your products and packaging on your own. We are applying these 2 drop test standards to conduct the drop test, i.e.
- International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) ISTA’s A1 procedure: This standard is applicable for packaged products weighing 150 lb (68 kg) or less
- American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) ASTM D5276 – 98 (2017): This standard is applicable for containers weighing 110 lb (50 kg) or less
WHAT IF THE CARTON DROP TEST FAILED?
A carton drop test is failed if any of the following issues are found after the test:
- Significant damage to export cartons
- Significant damage to inner/retail boxes
- Deformation, scratches, dents, or other damage to products inside
- Product functionality issues or safety hazards with product and packaging resulting from the test
What constitutes “significant damage” to cartons and boxes?
It is normal for a carton box to deform after a drop test. The carton’s corners or edges, for example, may indent slightly. However, the product inside the box should be completely safe. A carton passes if it has only minor deformation and no damage to the products inside.
