The textile industry is one of the largest industries in the world as the world’s population hit 7.8 billion in 2020. This industry contributed around $594.1 billion to the global economy in 2020. In contrast, the textile industry is also the second most polluting industry.

According to this fact, many leading fashion brands such as Zara, H&M, Fashion Revolution, and Everlane are paying more attention to the planet by doing sustainable fashion.

For instance, Zara together with its parent company, Inditex, commits by 2025 to only use natural textile material such as cotton, linen, and organic polyester, sustainable or recycled, which is 90% of the raw materials it uses.

In tune with Zara, H&M is also promoting their sustainability campaign “Leading the change” to achieve the goal of a circular and climate-positive fashion industry, while being a fair and equal company across the entire value chain. In 2019, H&M collected 29.005 tons of garments for recycling and reuse (equivalent to about 145 million T-shirts). Also, they launched new sustainable materials made from pineapple, algae, and citrus.

Additionally, Fashion Revolution and Everlane have quite similar sustainability campaign. Fashion Revolution with its “Who made my clothes” has a similar purpose with Everlane’s “radical transparency” which put ethical matters first. Both brands encourage the customers to be curious and then find out where and who manufacture their clothes. Therefore, the customer will be aware and wisely choose the company that is paying attention to the environment.

How we can get involved to make a better world?

Sustainability is not to focus and to do something on the environment only. There are four pillars of sustainability, i.e. Human sustainability, social sustainability, economic sustainability, and environmental sustainability.

As an importer, making sure you buy from a qualified supplier is a must do to avoid you from breaking a leg handling the problems in the future. Additionally, if your supplier is a green company who has great concern with the environment, it is a plus value for you.

As a third-party inspection company, Excellencial educates and shares the concept of sustainability to the suppliers during the inspection process. Because we believe in “sharing is caring”. Above all, human sustainability and environmental sustainability are something that cannot be separated and this is the time to give back to our planet.
